Respondus LockDown Browser is a specialized web browser that prevents students from searching the Internet and accessing other applications on their devices while taking an online exam. It is a tool intended to support academic integrity. Learn more about how Respondus works, how to set up a quiz, and what students experience.

Respondus Lockdown Browser is an application that attempts to prevent students from the following actions during the quiz:

  • Taking the Test from any Other Browser or Going to Non Specified Websites
  • Using Email or Messaging
  • Accessing Files Stored on their Computer or Other Applications
  • Printing or Capturing Screen Content
  • Using the Right Mouse Button
  • Using Function Keys or Task Switching Keystrokes
  • Viewing the Source Code for a Page
How Respondus Lockdown Browser Works
  • Assessments are displayed full-screen and cannot be minimized ​
  • Browser menu and toolbar options are removed, except for Back, Forward, Refresh, and Stop ​
  • Prevents access to other applications, including messaging, screen-sharing, virtual machines, and remote desktops ​
  • Printing and screen capture functions are disabled ​
  • Copying and pasting anything to or from an assessment is prevented ​
  • Right-click menu options, function keys, keyboard shortcuts, and task switching are disabled ​
  • An assessment cannot be exited until the student submits it for grading ​
  • Assessments that are set up for use with LockDown Browser cannot be accessed with other browsers 
Add Respondus Lockdown Browser to a quiz

Once you have created your quiz in Brightspace, you can then add a Respondus Lockdown requirement.

  1. Navigate to Activities on your course Nav bar and select Quizzes. On the Quizzes page click on LockDown Browser, this will open the Respondus LockDown Browser set up tool.
  1. If you receive the following message below select Continue.
  1. Click on the green drop-down arrow next to the quiz you would like to add the Respondus LockDown requirement and select Settings.
  1. Select the Lockdown Browser Settings to Require Respondus LockDown Browser for this exam. When you select Require Respondus, additional settings become available, including Password Settings, additional Advanced Settings, and Proctoring settings. Click Advanced Settings to expand and view additional options.
  1. Click Save + Close. Your quiz will now indicate that Respondus LockDown Browser is required.
How Students take a Brightspace quiz using the Respondus Lockdown Browser

Note – If your instructor requires Respondus LockDown Browser, you must download and install it on the computer you intend to use to take the test. Installation is required prior to launching the quiz. If you previously downloaded Respondus LockDown browser for use with Blackboard, it is recommended to download LockDown Browser again.

When students are ready to take their test, they must first shut down programs on their computer (including email, messaging systems, screen capture applications, etc.

  1. Navigate to the course and click on the quiz title to open the quiz.
  1. The quiz will open and display the quiz details. You will see the option to launch the LockDown Browser or download and install the latest version of Respondus LockDown browser. Once downloaded, select Launch.  
  1. You may be asked several times to close programs or close the browser. You should always choose to close programs and allow/open the LockDown Browser.
  1. Take the quiz in Respondus LockDown. Note: Once a quiz has started with LockDown Browser, the student cannot exit until the quiz has been submitted for grading.
  1. When you are finished with the quiz select done. Once Respondus shuts down, you will regain access to your computer. 
Tips and Tricks for using Respondus
  • Most issues with Respondus start with a machine not meeting the system requirements.  Have your students ensure their machines meet these basic requirements to use Respondus.
  • If a student requests a password, they are not using Respondus.  Have them make sure they are using Respondus and not their normal browser.
  • Create a simple test that students can take unlimited times to allow them to become familiar with using Respondus.
