USC’s new LMS – Brightspace- is a platform that prioritizes USC’s emerging learning technology needs. Beginning in Summer 2024, all previous Blackboard courses will be taught in Brightspace.

Creating a New Course in Brightspace

You have the option of using the course that was migrated for you or starting from scratch and creating a course in your Brightspace sandbox. Any content created in your sandbox can be copied into your upcoming course shell by following these steps.

The Course Consideration Checklist is helpful for reviewing and using your uplifted course content before the course start date.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if I do not see my Fall 2024 course in Brightspace?

You will only see courses in Brightspace for which you are listed as an instructor. If you do not see your course in Brightspace, review this information and follow the steps outlined to ensure you are properly assigned with the registrar and gain access.

How long will I have access to Blackboard?

You will have access to Blackboard until June 28. At that point, all of your course content before Spring 2021 will be archived and accessible via ITS ServiceNow ticket.  All student coursework will also be archived in case of incompletes.

I use Turnitin assignments. Will these submissions be migrated to Brightspace?

Turnitin assignment submissions will not migrate into Brightspace, as they are considered student coursework. These submissions can still be accessed via the Turnitin website, even after Blackboard is gone.

Learn More about Migrated Blackboard Content

Course Migration to Brightspace

Instructor’s course content from Spring 2021 – Fall 2023 in Blackboard was migrated into Brightspace automatically. Please note – Student Coursework will not migrate into Brightspace. Instructors are also able to request courses from the Blackboard Archive beginning July 25. The form to request an additional course to be migrated from Blackboard is here.

Spring 2024 Blackboard Courses

Course content from Spring 2024 will be available in Brightspace beginning in late September. If you need access to your Spring 2024 course ahead of that date, please use the following form to request access: Request an Archived Course.

Uplifted Blackboard Courses

Courses taught in Summer 2024 (20242), Fall 2024 (20243), and Spring 2025 (20251) will be ‘uplifted’ before they are released. Uplift refers to cleaning up a course by fixing broken links, removing references to ‘Blackboard’ throughout, and more. We recommend using the Course Consideration Checklist on all migrated material from Blackboard to ensure that your course is up to date ahead of teaching.

Those who are teaching in Brightspace will see the following:

  • Summer 2024/Fall 2024 Brightspace blank course: your blank course tied to SIS where Summer/Fall students will be enrolled. You are responsible for adding content and activating your course.
  • Course content from Blackboard: your uplifted Blackboard course migrated over and cleaned up in Brightspace. This content should reflect the most recent version of your course.
  • A Sandbox course: this can be used to practice in Brightspace. Any course content created in your sandbox can be copied into your Summer/Fall 2024 course shell.
