Brightspace enables users to create assignments, allowing students to submit their work online. Instructors can view submissions, associate assignments to rubrics and competencies, return submissions with grades and feedback, and assign evaluators.

There are two primary methods for creating assignments, outlined below:

  1. Users may create an assignment directly on the assignment page
  2. Users may create an assignment on the content page

Instructions

Create an Assignment on the Assignment Page
  1. On the Course Homepage, click on Activities, then click Assignments.
  1. On the Assignments page, click New Assignment.
  1. Add the assignment details, including title, grading method, due date, and instructions. You must provide a title for the assignment, but the rest of the assignment fields are optional.
  1. To link the assignment to the grade book, be sure that Grade Out Of is marked as Graded. Then, enter the total assignment points and due date. A column in the grade book will automatically be created for the assignment.
  1. The drop-down menus on the right allow you to edit additional settings, including release conditions, assignment types and categories, submission handling, and rubric attachments.
  1. Once you add assignment details and edit the settings, click the eye toggle at the bottom to allow students to see the assignment immediately. Click Save and Close.
  1. Your assignment is now created and visible to students on the Assignments page.
Create an Assignment on the Content Page
  1. On the Course Homepage, click on Content.
  1. On the Content page, select the module to which you wish to add the assignment, click Upload/Create, and then click New Assignment.
  1. Add the assignment details, including title, grading method, due date, and instructions. You must provide a title for the assignment, but the rest of the assignment fields are optional.
  1. Your assignment is now created and available within the module.
Assign Evaluators for Assignments

Evaluators can be assigned to an assignment before student submissions are received. This is an optional feature. Evaluators can include Instructors, Assistant Lecturers, Graders, and TAs.

Be sure to do this during assignment creation, as the setting will be locked after submissions are received. Note: This feature does not currently work if Turnitin V2 is being used.

  1. On the assignment creation page, navigate to the Evaluation and Feedback drop-down menu on the right and click Select Evaluators.
  1. Check the box next to the evaluator for the assignment, then click Done. Once evaluators are assigned, new settings will appear, so review and edit them as needed.
  1. The evaluator is now assigned!
Additional Evaluators for an Assignment

Instructors can choose to delegate assignment evaluations to TAs, Assistant Lecturers, Graders, or other Instructors.

Note: This is an optional feature that isn’t required for all grading. Adding multiple evaluators for an assignment can only be done before submissions are received. Once submissions are received, additional evaluators cannot be added. Additionally, it is important to note that Instructors can still use multiple evaluators if the New Turnitin integration is used just for the assignment. If old Turnitin is used or if instructors use any version of Turnitin for grading, these instructions are not applicable.

  1. On the assignment creation page, navigate to the Evaluation and Feedback dropdown menu on the right and click Select Evaluators.
  1. Check the box next to each person that should be able to evaluate the assignment.
  1. Click Done.
  1. After assigning evaluators, a new Publishers dropdown menu appears. This menu allows you to determine who can publish evaluations for learners to see. Click the dropdown menu and select the appropriate option. Note: The publisher(s) does not need to be one of the evaluators.

Allocate Evaluators to Learners

By default, any evaluator can evaluate any learner, however, learners can also be divided up among evaluators.

Instructions

  1. In the Evaluation and Feedback dropdown menu, click on Manage Allocations.
  1. Click on the Default Allocation Method dropdown menu and select Randomly allocate 1 evaluator to every learner evenly.
  1. Click Apply Allocation Method.
  1. Click Done.

Coordinate Multiple Evaluators

  1. Note: By default, any evaluator can evaluate any learner. If evaluators are not allocated to learners so that each learner only has one designated evaluator, then you must determine how to coordinate multiple evaluators. In the vast majority of situations, One shared evaluation should be selected. This allows publishers to release evaluations as they would normally. Selecting Multiple individual evaluations requires each evaluator to evaluate each learner before anything can be published.
Configure Assignments for Code Submissions

Brightspace allows users to submit code samples as an assignment or as part of an assignment. Note: These steps are applicable regardless of whether an assignment was created on the assignment page or from the content page.

  1. When creating or editing an assignment, the drop-down menus to the right can be used to enable code submissions. To do so, click Submission and Completion.
  1. Click the Submission Type dropdown menu and select Text Submission from the list. Note: For large coding projects or projects that require testing, it may be more effective to have students attach their script as a file.
  1. Click Save and Close.
