Create a New Badge
  1. Click Course Tools on the Navbar and select Course Admin from the dropdown menu.
  1. Click on Awards.
  1. Click on the Course Awards tab.
  1. Click Add Award to Course.
  1. Click on Create.
  1. On the New Award page, enter a NameDescription and Criteria for the new award. In the Criteria fields specify what a learner must do to achieve this award.
  1. Click on the Award Type dropdown menu and select Badge.
  1. In Availability, select the appropriate box(es) to indicate if you want the award to be available to other award managers and potential restrictions.
    • Option 1 – allows you to use the badge in any course you teach.
    • Option 2 – allows all instructors at USC to use the badge, if you select option 2, we recommend you also select the sub box under option 2 to limit badge use to your course and other instructors enrolled in that course.
  1. Use the Expiry section to declare when or if the badge should expire. To prevent the badge from expiring select Never. Otherwise, choose a fixed or relative period of time.
  1. In Choose Award Image, do one of the following:
    • If the image already exists in the image library, click From Existing Library.
    • To add a new icon to the image library, click Upload New Icon.
    • Click Create your own award image to design a badge inside the browser.
  1. Fill out the Issuer Information:
  1. Click Save and Close.
Add an Existing Badge to a Course
  1. Click Course Tools on the Navbar and select Course Admin from the dropdown menu.
  1. Click on Awards.
  1. Click on the Course Awards tab.
  1. Click Add Award to Course.
  1. Look through the list of badges and click the checkbox next to the badge you want.
  1. Click Add.
Automatically Issue Badges with Release Conditions
  1. Click Course Tools on the Navbar and select Course Admin from the dropdown menu.
  1. Click on Awards.
  1. Click on the Course Awards tab.
  1. Click Edit Properties next to the award that should be automatically issued.
  1. Under Release Conditions, click Create.
  1. Click on the Condition Type dropdown menu and select a release condition type. There are many options. For instance, badges can be automatically released when someone enrolls in a course or scores above a certain threshold on a quiz.
  1. Under Condition Details, further configure your release condition based upon the Condition Type you selected. This example is based on the “Score on a Quiz” condition type.
  1. Click Create.
  1. Click Save.
  1. Note: You can hide a badge from the Available Awards page until it’s earned. To do so, check the Award hidden until earned checkbox.
Manually Issue Badges
  1. Click Course Tools on the Navbar and select Course Admin from the dropdown menu.
  1. Click on Awards.
  1. Make sure you’re on the Classlist Awards tab.
  1. Click on the checkbox next to any students that will be issued an award.
  1. Click Issue.
  1. Select the appropriate award.
  1. Use the Evidence field to explain why the award is being issued. Note: this will be visible to students.
  1. Click Issue.
Copy An Award From Another Course

Note: this option is only applicable if the instructor selected option 2 (making badge available to all USC instructors) and the check box was selected (to restrict that award to that course) when the badge was created.

  1. Click Course Tools on the Navbar and select Course Admin from the dropdown menu.
  1. Click Import/Export/Copy Components.
  1. Select Copy Components from another Org Unit and click Search for offering.
  1. Search for and select the course from which you’d like to copy an award and click Add Selected.
  1. From the Import/Export/Copy Components page, click Select Components.
  1. Select Awards and choose whether to copy all awards or to select individual awards to copy. Note: If you are using release conditions with your awards, you will either have to recreate them in the new course or select them in this step and reconnect them to the award later.
  1. Click Continue.
  1. Click Finish.
Revoke an Award
  1. Click Course Tools on the Navbar and select Course Admin from the dropdown menu.
  1. Click on Awards.
  1. Make sure you’re on the Classlist Awards tab.
  1. Click on the checkbox next to any students that will have an award revoked.
  1. Click Revoke.
  1. Select the award that should be revoked.
  1. Add a reason for revoking the award. Note: The revoke reason will be visible to students.
  1. Click Revoke.
