The Manage Grades tab enables you to create and edit grade items and grade categories and reorder your grade book. It is also the easiest place to see if a grade item is hidden for students. The main actions within the Manage Grades tab include:

  • Create a Grade Category with a name and description to organize and group related grade items into sections in your grade book.
  • Create a Grade Item to represent all the work that will be evaluated in a course.
  • Reorder Grade Items within a Grade Category.

Instructions

Create a Grade Category
  1. From the course homepage, click My Grades then Grades.
  1. Check that you are on the Manage Grades tab. Once on the tab click New, then Category.
  1. On the Properties tab, enter the information for the category including:
    • General information: Name, Short Name, and Description.
    • Grading: Weight or points for the category and distribution including the option to drop grade items from the category.
  1. Additionally, enter the Display Options or how students will view the grades.
  1. The Restrictions tab provides the option to hide the grade category from students or provide availability dates. Once all information and settings are entered correctly. Click Save and Close.
  1. The Grade Category is now created!
Create a Grade Item

Note: When creating an assignment, quiz, or discussion you can automatically associate it with the grade book and create a grade item within the settings page for that activity. In this case, an additional Grade Item does not need to be created, but it may need to be associated with a Grade Category.

  1. From the course homepage, click My Grades then Grades.
  1. Check that you are on the Manage Grades tab. Once on the tab click New, then Item.
  1. Select the Grade Item Type from the list of options.
  1. On the Properties tab, enter the information and settings for the grade item. The available options will vary based on the Grade Item type selected in the previous step.
  1. The Restrictions tab provides the option to hide the grade item from students or provide availability dates.
  1. The Grade Item is now created!
Reorder Grade Items
  1. From the course homepage, click My Grades then Grades.
  1. Check that you are on the Manage Grades tab. Once on the tab click More Actions, then Reorder.
  1. On the Reorder Grade Items and Categories page, click the drop-down under sort order for any of the categories or grade items and select the new order. Once all changes are selected, click Save. The page will redirect to the Manage Grades tab and the new order will be reflected.
