Panorama is a third-party accessibility tool that allows students to access learning materials in alternative file formats to meet their individual needs. Panorama also helps faculty review their own course materials for accessibility by scanning files, identifying issues in course accessibility reports, and providing actionable solutions.
Accessibility Scores in Panorama
Panorama will generate Accessibility Scores for DOC, DOCX, PPT, PPTX, PDF, HTML, TXT, GIF, XLS, XLSX, ODT, ODP, ODS, RTF file types, and editable HTML pages. These scores are not visible to students (learners).
- Accessibility Score icons are located next to each file type or along the top of HTML content and provide a quick at-a-glance summary of the Accessibility Score based on their color.
- The Blue Circle is for student view.
- The Green Hexagon is for accessibility scores greater than 70%.
- The Yellow Triangle is for accessibility scores between 30% and 70%.
- The Red Octagon is for accessibility scores less than or equal to 30%.
- The Grey Prohibition Sign is for documents with disabled alternative formats.
Using Accessibility Reports
Accessibility Reports provide comprehensive insights into specific areas where the accessibility of your documents can be enhanced, offering valuable guidance for improvement. Each module displays a quick indicator of overall accessibility on the content page.
- Click on Content on the Navbar.
- To see the full breakdown of the accessibility score of a specific file, click on the Accessibility Score icon to open the Alternative Formats menu. Note: You may need to click into a submodule to see the accessibility scores of files placed there.
- In the Alternative Formats menu, click on Accessibility Report.
- In the Accessibility Report, review the Review Issues list to determine what, if any, accessibility issues are present. Some examples of missing accessibility components that may be listed include missing page numbers, missing titles, and issues with color contrasts.
Panorama Tools for Correcting Files
The Accessibility Report offers multiple ways in which to self-resolve accessibility issues that have been identified under the Review Issues list. To improve access to course content for all students, instructors are encouraged to correct each of the listed issues.
Notes:
- Panorama tools do not provide comprehensive ADA compliant document remediation. For assistance with ADA compliant document remediation efforts visit the Office of Institutional Accessibility and ADA Compliance’s Training website for Audit and Remediation Services or a consultation. If you would like to schedule a workshop on accessibility for your department please visit the Center for Excellence in Teaching.
- These methods of fixing a file, in essence, create a second version of the original file that only exists in the Panorama plugin. Instructors and students will be able to access the corrected file by clicking on the accessibility score icon next to the file name. However, if instructors or students access the file directly from the Brightspace interface, they will see the old, unedited version. To prevent this, instructors are encouraged to download the corrected file and reupload it to Brightspace. Guidance for doing so can be found in the instructions for each method below.
