In Brightspace, when attempting to delete content, users must click Confirm, or other affirmative text to help mitigate accidental deletions. However, should content get accidentally deleted, there are often ways to restore the deleted item. The process to restore accidentally deleted content is outlined below. Note: Some deleted items cam only be restored within 30 days of their deletion. This restriction is indicated when applicable.

Deleted Items that Require a Support Ticket

There are several items not mentioned above that can only be restored through a D2L Support Request ticket. For this process, submit a ticket to ITS and provide them with the Required Information for your deleted item. ITS will submit a D2L ticket on your behalf. Below are the Object Types with their Required Information: Note: D2L will not restore anything listed above this section.

  • Overwritten Assignment Submissions: Requirements include, assignment name, user impacted, and submission date. Note: This can only be done for assignment submissions that are overwritten.
  • Checklist: Requirements include the deleted checklist and the course name.
  • Content Modules/Topics: Exact Module/Topic name(s) are required. Note: This only applies to deleted items. We cannot revert content to a specific date/time.
  • Content (Manage) Files: File names and point in time when files existed are required.
  • Emails: Folder name and username are required.
  • Group Assignments: Requirements include the course group, the name of the deleted group and when the group was deleted.
  • Learning Objects: LORdentId is required (can be found in the content quick link).
  • Self-Assessments/Surveys: Requirements include the object name and the Course OrgUnitId. Additionally, it is required to note how many user attempts there were on said self-assessment/survey. If a survey is restored, any attempts associated will be restored automatically.
  • Quiz Questions: Requirements include the Course OrgunitId, the deleted Quiz name, and question details.
  • Rubrics: Requirements include the course OrgUnitId, the name of the rubric, and the date it was deleted. Note: Rubrics in use are unable to be deleted. This will only impact rubrics that have not yet been used.
  • Users: First/last name, username, and email are required. The user cannot have been recreated as this would result in duplicates.
  • Virtual Classroom (Bongo): Username, course, meeting/session name, timestamp.

Considerations:

  • Restores must be reported to D2L as soon as possible after the deletion. They can only restore data within 30 days of deletion.
  • Objects can only be restored to their Original Org Unit (no transferring data between Org Units. For example, restoring deleted content objects from one course offering to another).
  • Full course restores cannot be performed. A list of specific components (e.g. assignments, files, etc.) must be submitted should a full restore be needed. You can use those components to rebuild the structure of your course content.
  • When requesting Content restore, please be aware that restoration is only available for Deleted items. Unfortunately, items cannot be reverted to a state at a specific date/time.
  • Content items are restored as Draft within the Table of Contents. The instructor can determine what can be published.
  • If an investigation into who and/or how the objects were deleted is requested, please submit a separate Support Case for that investigation.
  • If an Object is not listed above, unfortunately, restoration is not possible at this time.
