Learn how to navigate Brightspace as a student and understand common elements across courses.

Navigate your course homepage

Get to know some of the main features on your course homepage:

  1. Click on the “USC” logo to navigate back to the Brightspace landing page with all the courses
  2. The Course Selector will show all courses in a drop-down menu
  3. Message Alerts notifies about unread mail
  4. Subscription Alerts notifies about new or updated announcements, grades, and due or end dates for course activities or assessments
  5. Update Alerts notifies about new blog posts or discussions posts in which the user is subscribed
  6. The Learner’s Name opens a personal menu to edit settings such as profile, notifications, account settings, and preferred language settings

The navigation bar links to course-specific tools. The style, layout, and available links may change based on the course. Similarly, a course homepage can vary by instructor.

Navigate Course Content in Brightspace

The Content section of Brightspace is where you will view course materials such as weekly readings. Please note that your instructor may have made changes to their course navbar, so the Content tab may appear elsewhere.  

  1. On your course home page, navigate to Content.
  2. From there, you can view the Table of Contents for all your courses’ content and view the modules for your course. Modules may be organized by week, or by subject matter.
  3. By selecting any module, you can view the content available for that module. The progress bar shows the title of the module shows your completion rate as you explore the content within each module.
